In the greatest finish in league history, Sam Podolan scored a net double-eagle on hole # 18 to record a score of 20 points to take the title in the final Special Fun Event of the season.  There were five league members who recorded scores of 19 points for the event, and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers were determined by the handicap tiebreaker.  Patti Noble finished as runner-up, Mike George was third and Pam Mickley came in fourth.  Sam's second consecutive Special Event victory vaulted him into first place in Fun Game prize winnings for the season.  All league results for the entire season are now on the course web site.

Congratulations to the winners of each flight in the second half of the season:

  • Flight A:  Blase Cindric
  • Flight B:  Deb Fair
  • Flight C:  Jim Lowry

Podolan Tops the Field in Modified Stableford Tournament

In the special event of the week, Sam Podolan earned the most points in our Modified Stableford Tournament, running away with it with 2 net eagles and a net double eagle to post a score of +18 points.  Runner-up honors went to Tony Curic with +8 points; Jim Lowry finished 3rd with +6 points, and Jack Hurban came in fourth with a score of +3 points for the round.  Sam's first place finish this week moves him to 4th place for the season in Special Fun Event winnings, and Jim jumped up to 3rd place for the season with his 3rd place finish this week.  With one week left in the 2023 season, the second-half flight races are still up for grabs.  Use the links on this page to check out where you stand in your flight, and to see the Skins game and Special Event results from Week 17 of league play.

Our end-of-year outing is set for Bedford Trails Golf Course in Lowellville, OH on Saturday, September 23.  We are hoping for a 1:30 pm shotgun start, but we still need to confirm that with the course – we may need to delay the start until 1:45 on that day.  We should have that worked out this week and will let everyone know for sure what the start time will be.  After golf, we'll stay at Bedford Trails for our meal and prizes galore!  Should be a fun way to finish off the 2023 season.

Marks Routs Captain Bogey to Take the Top Spot in the Special Event of the Week

In this week's fun event, each player took on Captain Bogey in match play, and Mary Rose Marks took the Captain to the proverbial woodshed, beating him by a score of 9 up in her match to take top honors for the week.  Mike George was runner-up in the special event with a 7 up victory over the Captain.  Two players beat the Captain 6 up and finished in 3rd and 4th places; by virtue of the handicap tie-breaker, Rich Arnold finished in third place and Jim Anderson was fourth.  To see all results from the week, use the links on this page.

Only two weeks are left in the 2023 season, and the flight races are up for grabs.  Whoever finishes in the top three spots in each flight will be determined by who plays best down the stretch.  Bring your best game to the course and finish strong the next two weeks!

Season Enters Home Stretch; Osborne wins 33–24–15 Special Event

Monday was scorching hot, but Tuesday was a great weather day; hope you were able to take advantage of the weather to play on one of the league days this week.  There are only three more weeks remaining in the 2023 Keg Golf League season, and many of the flight races are tight as we head toward the end of the second half.  Dick Osborne was the winner of the 33-24-15 tournament special event, winning by 4 points over runner-up Michelle Goodemote.  Janice Schwanbeck finished 3rd via the handicap tie-breaker, and Jim Wolf was 4th in the special event.  You can see the points earned by each player in the special event, along with the flight and skins results by using the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

Looking ahead, don't forget that our end-of-year outing is scheduled to be held at Bedford Trails Golf Course in Coitsville, OH on Saturday, September 23.  After golf, we'll stay at Bedford Trails for a catered meal, along with prizes from the day and from the season.  Make plans to join us!  More information about the outing will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead.

Many Fairways Were Missed Off the Tee this Week as George Wins Special Event

Congratulations to Mike George, who hit only 2 out of 7 fairways for the round and won the top prize in this week's special fun event – the only time that missing fairways helps you!  Dick Osborne and Jim Wolf finished in 2nd and 3rd places, also hitting 2 of the 7 fairways for the round; the handicap tie-breaker was used to determine that Dick was 2nd and Jim finished 3rd.  Marla Nardo took 4th place by winning the handicap tie-breaker among the six league members who hit 3 of 7 fairways for the round.

With four more weeks left in the second half of the 2023 season, the races for the top three spots in each flight are still up for grabs.  You can view all the results of this week's play on the league's web site.  If you don't have a back-nine golf out in the bank, remember that you can submit a golf-out score for that nine by Sunday of this week to count for your Week # 14 score.

Means Wins The Elimination Challenge as Flight Races Tighten in the 2nd Half

Monday was off and on rainy but Tuesday was a very nice weather day for Week # 13 of action in The Keg Golf League.  The standings in several of the flights changed this week, as many good scores were turned in.  In the Special Event of the week, The Elimination Challenge, there were 15 players who made it through all 9 holes without being eliminated, so they are ranked by their net totals for the round.  Michele Means was the winner of the Elimination Challenge for 2023, firing a 2-under-par net score of 34.  Bob Noble, Justin Kraynak and Blase Cindric carded net scores of 35, with Bob winning the handicap tie-breaker to finish in 2nd place; Justin took 3rd place and Blase finished in fourth place.  Use the links on this page to view all results of league matches, the Skins Games and the Special Event of the Week.

Mickley Scores Closest to 31 on the 31st of July

It was a very comfortable start to the week for late July and early August, weather-wise, and that led to some hot scores being turned in by league members this week.  In the special event for Week 12, Pam Mickley won the tie-breaker for the top prize after shooting a net score of 31 after the first 7 holes of the round.  There were 5 league members who had a net score of 31 after 7 holes in their rounds this week, and the finishing positions were determined by the handicap tie-breaker rules.  Bob Noble took this week's runner-up spot, Jim Wolf was third, and Justin Kraynak finished in fourth.  You can use the links at the top and/or right side of this page to see all the week's results and the current standings in all the flights.

Podolan Wins Top Spot in Special Event By a Wide Margin; Many Early Net Bogeys were made in League Play this Week

Only six players made it past hole number 2 without making a net bogey this week, as the course was challenging for league members.  Sam Podolan had the longest stretch of holes without a net bogey, making it through 8 holes before ending the string on # 9, so he's the winner of the Fun Game of the Week.  Mike Bazoian took the runner-up spot by playing his first 4 holes without a net bogey, and he's now the overall leader in Special Event prize winnings for the season.  Andrew Ondo finished in third place with 3 straight holes without a net bogey, and Marla Nardo finished in fourth place; both Andrew and Marla won the handicap tie-breaker to finish in those spots.  To see all results from Week # 11 of league action, use the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

Second Half of Season gets underway; Lawrence wins Fewest Putts Event

The first week of the 2nd half of the season featured some good scores that were turned in by league members.  In the special event on July 17 & 18, Paula Lawrence was the hottest putter of the week, needing only 14 putts to complete her round and winning the event via the handicap tiebreaker over the other players who also had 14 putts for their round; Mary Rose Marks was runner-up, with Brennan Lowry taking third place.  Dick Osborne finished in 4th place with 15 putts for his round, winning the tie-breaker to claim the prize.

We start over with everyone having 0 points going into Week # 10 in their flight, and the leader in each of the six flights is a different player than the person who won that flight in the first half.  You can view the gross scores, net skins, special event results, Hole-of-the-Week Club and Eagles Club information by using the links at the top and/or right-side of the league home page.

First Half of Season ends with exciting action in all Flights

The July 10 & 11 rounds of play in The Keg Golf League marked the end of the first half of the 2023 season.  The top three finishers in each flight win a prize to be distributed at the end-of-season outing in September.  The winners in each flight won't be officially determined until this Sunday night, because league members have until then to submit a golf-out score for the week if they didn't play on Monday.  Click on the "Standings" link at the top of the page and then check out the link for July 10 to see the unofficial standings for the first half.  In Week 9's special event, Patti Noble won the first place prize with a score of 70 points, Heather Shuttleworth was runner-up with 67 points, Andrew Ondo finished 3rd with 56 points, and JoAnn Bahr was fourth with 54 points.

See you on Sunday for our Mid-Season Outing!  It'll be a 2:00 pm shotgun start for our 18-hole scramble, with our picnic supper to follow the golf.  Let's have a great day and get ready for the second half of league competition.

Anderson Partners With Old Man Par to Take Top Honors in Special Event of the Week

With only one week to go in the first half of the 2023 season, the races in most of the flights are still up for grabs, so next week promises to be exciting as the top finishers in each flight for the first half of the season are determined.  Be sure to play this coming week or have a front-nine golf-out score turned in for the last week of the first half!

Jim Anderson teamed up with Old Man Par to shoot a better-ball net score of 32 to win this week's fun event.  Two league members had a score of 33 when partnering with Old Man Par; Patty Iwanejko took second place via the handicap tie-breaker, and Mike Bazoian finished third.  Mike George finished fourth by winning the tie-breaker against the other four players whose score for the special event was 34 strokes.  To see the latest results from the league, use the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

The Mid-Season Outing / Field Day for our league will be Sunday, July 16 at Tam O'Shanter.  We will be playing an 18-hole Scramble with a 2:00 pm shotgun start, followed by a picnic dinner after the conclusion of the golf.  A sign-up sheet will be at the front counter at Tam O'Shanter, and is available even if you golf-out — please sign the sheet and indicate whether you will be coming for both golf and dinner, for dinner only, or if you won't be able to attend the outing this year.  Guests are welcome at a cost of $15, and you can sign their names to the sign-up sheet as well.  Should be a lot of fun, so make plans to be there!  PLEASE let us know soon if you will be attending — thank you.

Only Two More Weeks Left in First Half of Season; Cindric Has Most One-Putt Greens

Blase Cindric had 4 one-putt greens on June 26, more than anyone else who played on Monday or Tuesday of this week, so he takes the first place prize in this week's Fun Special Event.  Mike Bazoian had three one-putt greens and finished in second place.  There were 2 league members who had 2 one-putt greens, so the handicap tie-breaker was used to determine third and fourth places:  Mike DeJulia came in 3rd and Jim Wolf was 4th.  With just two weeks remaining in the first half of the season, it's time to start thinking about our Mid-Season Outing, scheduled for Sunday, July 16 at Tam O'Shanter.  This event will have a 2:00 pm shotgun start, followed by a picnic supper at the course.  Be sure to plan to play in this special league event!  A signup sheet will be available at the course the next two weeks for you to let us know if you will be able to make it, or you can send e-mail to thekeg@blaseweb.com to let us know if you can participate.

Hurban Cards Most Gross and Net 5's in Week 6

The first half of the season is now two-thirds complete, and the flight races are taking shape but are still up for grabs.  Jack Hurban won this week's special fun event, having the most gross and net 5's on his scorecard, with eight of them.  Mike DeJulia and Jim Lowry both had seven 5's and took 2nd and 3rd places in the event, respectively, based on the handicap tie-breaker.  Jenn Abbott won the tie-breaker for 4th place among the four league members who had six 5's for the round.  Blase Cindric carded the first gross eagle of the season made by a member of the Eagles Club with a 3 on # 13.  All of the results from Week 6 of the season can be viewed by using the links at the top or right-hand side of this page.

Mark your calendars — our Mid-Season Outing / Field Day will be held on Sunday, July 16 at Tam O'Shanter.  We'll have a 2:00 pm shotgun start for the golf, followed by food and fun.  More details about the outing will be forthcoming in the next several weeks, so stay tuned.

Noble wins Sudden-Death Playoff on 5th Hole

The special event this week was a Sudden-Death Playoff involving everyone in the league who played on Monday or Tuesday, starting on # 1.  The playoff went 5 holes before a winner could be determined.  On the first hole, five players carded net birdies, knocking everyone else out of the playoff.  On hole # 2, Blase Cindric made a net bogey to drop out of the playoff, leaving 4 players moving on to # 3.  Bob Noble and Dean Osborne scored net birdies on # 3 and continued on in the playoff; Deb Fair made a net par to finish in 3rd place in the playoff, and Heather Shuttleworth finished 4th for the event.  Both Bob and Dean scored net pars on # 4, and then on # 5, Bob's net birdie bested Dean's net par, making Bob the winner and Dean the runner-up for the event.  You can view all results from the June 12th and 13th round by using the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

The date and location of our Mid-Season Outing is Sunday, July 16 at Tam O'Shanter.  More details will be shared in the next couple of weeks about this fun league event.  Save the date!

Stevenson Wins Best Poker Hand Event with Five of a Kind

The unusually dry conditions for early June led to a host of low scores shot by league members.  In the Special Event this week, Jim Stevenson and Dean Osborne both carded five net 5's to post the best poker hands for anyone who played on Monday or Tuesday; Jim wins first prize via the handicap tie-breaker, and Dean takes second place.  Michelle Piccirilli and Sam Podolan, along with four other players, each had five net 4's for their poker hands, and Michelle and Sam took third and fourth place, respectively, via the handicap tie-breaker.  The competition for the top spots in each the flights is really going strong as we are well into the 2023 season.

After four weeks of league play, Janice Lowry has taken a 1-stroke lead in the Hole-of-the-Week Club standings, by virtue of her net birdie on the hole of the week this week, # 11.  There is a 2-way tie for second place at two under par.  To see the Hole-of-the-Week Club standings, the poker hands made from the net scores of everyone who played their league round on Monday or Tuesday, and all other results of week # 4 of league play, use the links at the top or at the right side of this page.

We had beautiful weather on Memorial Day; Moreland wins Special Event of the Week

After three weeks of league play in 2023, we are well underway with the golf season.  Each flight is competitive, and the lead changed hands in five of the six flights this week.  Be sure to turn in golf-outs for the weeks you can't play on Monday or Tuesday.

Linda Moreland won the special event for the week, with a score of 22 after throwing out her two worst net holes.  Second through fourth places went to Janice Lowry, JoAnn Bahr and Paula Lawrence, each with 23 strokes not counting their two worst scores.  Janice won the tie-breaker for second place, JoAnn was in third due to the tie-breaker, and Paula finished fourth this week.  All of the results from the third week of league play can be viewed by using the links at the top or right-hand side of this page.

For our next league round, scheduled for Monday, June 5, we will have a special shot-gun start at 5:30 pm for our league play on the back-nine, because Tam O'Shanter is closed until 5 pm for a large golf outing that day.  The shotgun start should be fun – try to attend!  But if you can't play at that time on 6/5, you can always play your league round on Tuesday, 6/6, or you can turn in a back-nine golf-out score for the week anytime before Sunday, June 11.

Weingartner, Lowry are Most Accurate Drivers in Week 2 Action; Most Flight Races Tight after Two Weeks

The standings in five of the six flights are close after the first two weeks of league play, with the flight leader ahead by 2 points or less.  The exception is Flight E, where Andrew Ondo has jumped out to a 2½ point lead, but it's still very early in the season.  In our league, it really hurts you if you miss a week of league play without turning in a golf-out score, so be sure to golf out during those weeks that you can't make it on Monday or Tuesday for league play.  You can also bank golf-out scores in advance if you know that you'll have to miss on a particular league day.

The special event for the week was most tee shots in the fairway, and Emma Weingartner and Jim Lowry outpaced the field, each hitting 6 out of 7 fairways in their rounds.  Emma takes the top prize by virtue of the handicap tie-breaker, and Jim is runner-up for the event.  Heather Shuttleworth took 3rd place by hitting 5 of 7 fairways via the handicap tie-breaker to finish ahead of Judy Malatesta, who took 4th place also with 5 of 7 fairways hit in her round.  Use the links at the top or right-hand side of the page to see all the results from Week # 2 of league play.

This coming Monday is Memorial Day, and it will be a normal league play day for us.  Tam O'Shanter has arranged for us to pay the regular weekday rate if we start our round after noon, so make your plans to celebrate the holiday on the links!  If you can't make it that day to play, you can play on Tuesday, May 30, or use a golf-out score that you have in the bank or one that you turn in later in the week.

Season Opens with Really Nice Weather; Kraynak wins Fewest Putts Event

It was actually nice weather for a change on May 15 & 16 for the opening round of play in The Keg Golf League for 2023 – hope that's a predictor for the entire season!  In the special event of the week, Justin Kranyak was the boss of the moss, taking only 12 putts for his 9-hole round to win the top spot in the event.  Carol Osborne and Rich Arnold tied with 13 putts in their rounds; Carol wins 2nd place via the handicap tiebreaker, and Rich finishes in 3rd.  Fourth place in the special event goes to Pam Mickley, who finished with 14 total putts and won the handicap tiebreaker.  This year, 4th place in the special event wins a Poker Chip Ball Marker with The Keg Golf League's logo on it.  You can view the gross scores, net skins, special event results, Eagle's Club and Hole-of-the-Week Club information and season-long statistical summary by using the links at the top and/or right-side of the league home page.

We will calculate new handicaps after each week of league play, so you can see what your handicap will be for next week by clicking on the "Handicaps for Week 2" link in the right-hand column of the league home page.

The flight standings aren't finalized until all league members have a chance to turn in a golf-out score for the week.  If you play a round on the same nine as we played that week (week 1 was on the front nine) you can turn in a score for the week as long as you do it by Sunday night of the week you missed.  You can also turn in scores in advance to be put in the golf-out bank if you know you'll be missing a week in the future.  Just leave your scorecard with the staff at the front desk at Tam O'Shanter.

Ready for the Start of the Season on May 15 and 16

The 2023 Thelma's Golf Nook season gets underway this Monday, May 15.  Check the "Flights for First Half" and "Handicaps for Week 1" links that will be posted in the right-hand column of this page sometime this weekend to see what your starting handicap and flight will be.  All players will be placed in a flight with players of comparable handicaps.   We will adjust handicaps each week based on the previous week's score, but you will stay in the same flight for the entire first half of the season.

Tam O'Shanter is hosting a large Pro-Am golf tournament this Monday, so you won't be able to play your league round on Monday until later in the afternoon.  You should call the pro shop and make a tee time for later in the afternoon on Monday or for a time on Tuesday to get the season started.  The weather forecast looks pretty decent for Monday and Tuesday, so hopefully we'll have a big turnout of players for the first week of league play.  Good luck to one and all, and let's get off to a great start this year!

May11

Second Practice Round Scheduled for May 8/9

Hopefully the weather will allow many league members will tee it up this week at Tam O'Shanter.  Please turn in your scorecard so we can calculate handicaps for the start of the season.  If you know of anyone who's thinking of joining the league this year, please encourage them to play practice rounds so they will have a handicap for the first weeks of league play.

We're continuing the season-long optional competition in the league this year called the Hole-of-the-Week Club.  If you want to play, it's only $18 for the whole season (that's just $1 a week).  Each week, one of the holes in your nine will be designated as the Hole of the Week, and we'll record your net score on that hole (after handicap strokes are deducted) in the book.  At the end of the season, the players with the lowest total for the Holes of the Week will split the pot!  How many places we pay out will be based on how many people participate.  Here are the holes of the week for each week:

May 15/16:   Hole # 1 June 26/27:   Hole # 4 Aug 7/8:   Hole # 7
May 22/23:   Hole # 10 July 3/4:   Hole # 13 Aug 14/15:   Hole # 16
May 29/30:   Hole # 2 July 10/11:   Hole # 5 Aug 21/22:   Hole # 8
June 5/6:   Hole # 11 July 17/18:   Hole # 14 Aug 28/29:   Hole # 17
June 12/13:   Hole # 3 July 24/25:   Hole # 6 Sept 4/5:   Hole # 9
June 19/20:   Hole # 12 Jul 31/Aug 1:   Hole # 15 Sept 11/12:   Hole # 18

Since we're using net scores, everyone has a good chance to win this, especially higher handicap players.  Why not give it a shot this year and join the fun?!?

If you've paid your league dues already, thank you! Don't forget that league dues must be paid by May 29.

May4

First Practice Round is coming up this Monday, May 1!

We will have two practice rounds for the golf league before actual competition starts this year. This gives everyone a chance to turn in some scores to establish a start-of-season handicap, and to get back into the swing of things.  If you play practice rounds, your handicap for the start of the season will be determined half from your handicap at the end of last year + 2, and half from the practice rounds you play.  Our first practice round is scheduled for Monday, May 1.  Make plans to play, turn in your scorecard, and reconnect with your friends in the golf league (or if you can't play on Monday, turn in a golf-out score if you play later in the week).

If you are new to the league this year, please plan to play and establish some scores for your handicap at the start of the year.  If you can't play on Mondays the next two weeks, be sure to golf out.  See you at the course!
