Hot Weather Keeps Many League Members From Playing on Monday; Wolf Partners With Old Man Par to Win Special Event of the Week

The scorching temperatures on Monday resulted in a small turnout for golf on league day this week.  Only 17 players played in the heat on July 5.  Remember that you can turn in a golf-out score up until Sunday and have it count as your Week 8 round; or you can use a back-nine golf-out score if you have one in the bank already.

Jim Wolf won his third special event of the season, this week partnering with Old Man Par to shoot a blistering 11-under-par net score of 25 to take the top spot in the event.  Tom Hinkson finished as runner-up this week with a net 31 score; Charlene Osborne won a three-way tie-breaker among the league members who had net 32 scores in the event to finish in third place, and Carol Osborne won the tie-breaker for the fourth spot.

With only one more week left in the first half of the 2021 season, the races for the top three spots in each flight are still highly contested.  Be sure to view all the results of this week's play on the web site.

Rice defeats Tiberia and Arnold in Sudden-Death Playoff on 3rd Hole

The special event this week was a Sudden-Death Playoff involving everyone in the league who played on Monday night, starting on # 1.  On the first hole, there were five players who carded net birdies, so everyone else was out of the playoff.  On hole # 2, Rich Arnold, Gary Rice and Flavio Tiberia made net pars, knocking Judy Malatesta and Dean Osborne out of the playoff; Dean had a net bogey to take 4th place over Judy's net 5.  Then on hole # 3, Gary scored a net eagle to take top honors for the week.  Rich and Flavio both had net pars on # 3, so moving on to # 4, Flavio scored a net par to take 2nd place, and Rich finished in 3rd in the special event.  You can view all results from the June 14th round by using the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

The date and location of our Mid-Season Outing is Sunday, July 18 at Tam O'Shanter.  More details will be shared in the next couple of weeks about this fun league event.  Save the date!

Osborne Wins Best Poker Hand Event with Five of a Kind

After an afternoon rainstorm, it was hot and steamy for our 5:15 shotgun start for Week 4 of league action, but at least it stayed dry during the round.  In the Special Event this week, Carol Osborne carded five net 6's to post the best poker hand of everyone who played on Monday.  Rich Arnold finished in second place with five net 5's; Emma Weingartner and Mike George each had five net 4's and won the handicap tie-breakers to finish in third and fourth place, respectively.  The lead changed hands in several flights this week, so the competition is really going as we are well into the 2021 season.  To see the poker hands made from all players' net scores, and all other results of week # 4 of league play, use the links at the top or at the right side of this page.

Nice Weather on Memorial Day; Wolf Wins Special Event of the Week

After three weeks of league play in 2021, the season is well underway.  Each flight is competitive, and the lead changed hands in half of the flights this week.  Be sure to turn in golf-outs for the weeks you can't play on Monday.

Jim Wolf won the special event for the week, with a score of 23 after throwing out his two worst net holes.  Second place went to Michelle Piccirilli with 25 strokes not counting her two worst scores.  Gordon Longstreet and Dylan Osborne finished third and fourth, respectively, with scores of 26; Gordon won the tie-breaker for third place.  All of the results from the third week of league play can be viewed by using the links at the top or right-hand side of this page.

For our next league round, scheduled for Monday, June 7, we will have a special shot-gun start at 5:15 pm for our league play on the back-nine, because Tam O'Shanter is closed until 5 pm for a large golf outing that day.  The shotgun start should be fun – try to attend!  But if you can't play at that time on 6/7, you can always turn in a back-nine golf-out score for the week anytime before Sunday, June 13.

Marks is Most Accurate Driver on May 24; Most Flight Races Tight after Two Weeks

The standings in five of the six flights are close after the first two weeks of league play, with the flight leader ahead by 2 ½ points or less.  The exception is Flight E, where Gary Rice is out to a big lead; but it's still very early in the season!  In our league, it really hurts you if you miss a week of league play without turning in a golf-out score, so be sure to golf out during those weeks that you can't make it on Monday for league play.  You can also bank golf-out scores in advance if you know that you'll have to miss on a particular league day.

The special event for the week was most tee shots in the fairway, and Mary Rose Marks took first place honors by hitting 7 of 7 fairways in her round.  Runner-up was Gordon Longstreet, also with 7 out of 7 drives in the fairway; Mary Rose won the handicap tie-breaker for 1st place.  Emma Weingartner and Judy Malatesta took 3rd and 4th place by virtue of hitting 6 of 7 fairways and winning the handicap tie-breaker.  Use the links at the top or right-hand side of the page to see all the results from Week # 2 of league play.

This coming Monday is Memorial Day, and it will be a normal league play day for us.  Tam O'Shanter has arranged for us to pay the regular weekday rate if we start our round after noon, so make your plans to celebrate the holiday on the links!  If you can't make it that day to play, you can use a golf-out score that you have in the bank or one that you turn in later in the week.

Season Opens on a Day of Nice Weather; Tiberia wins Fewest Putts Event

It was pretty nice weather-wise on May 17 for the opening round of play in the Thelma's Golf Nook League for 2021.  In the special event of the week, Flavio Tiberia was the boss of the moss, needing only 14 putts to complete his round.  Jim Wolf and Blase Cindric had 15 putts in their rounds, Jim winning the tie-breaker for 2nd place with Blase finishing 3rd.  Fourth place in the special event went to Paula Lawrence, with 16 total putts and winning the tie-breaker over two other league members.  You can view the gross scores, net skins, special event results, Eagle's Club information and season-long statistical summary by using the links at the top and/or right-side of the league home page.

We will calculate new handicaps after each week of league play, so you can see what your handicap will be for next week by clicking on the "Handicaps for Week 2" link in the right-hand column of the league home page.

The flight standings aren't finalized until all league members have a chance to turn in a golf-out score for the week.  If you play a round on the same nine as we played that week (week 1 was on the front nine) you can turn in a score for the week as long as you do it by Sunday night of the week you missed.  You can also turn in scores in advance to be put in the golf-out bank if you know you'll be missing a week in the future.  Just leave your scorecard with the staff at the front desk at Tam O'Shanter.

Ready for the Start of the 2021 Season on Monday, May 17

The 2021 Thelma's Golf Nook season gets underway this Monday, May 17.  Check the "Flights for First Half" and "Handicaps for Week 1" links in the right-hand column of this page to see what your starting handicap and flight will be.  All players will be placed in a flight with players of comparable handicaps.   We will adjust handicaps each week based on the previous week's score, but you will stay in the same flight for the entire first half of the season.

The weather forecast looks pretty good for Monday, so hopefully we'll have a big turnout of players for the first week of league play.  Good luck to one and all, and let's get off to a great start this year!

May14

Second Practice Round Scheduled for May 10

Hopefully the weather will allow many league members will tee it up this week at Tam O'Shanter.  Please turn in your scorecard so we can calculate handicaps for the start of the season.  If you know of anyone who's thinking of joining the league this year, please encourage them to play practice rounds so they will have a handicap for the first weeks of league play.

If you've paid your league dues already, thank you! Don't forget that league dues must be paid by May 31.

May7

First Practice Round is Tomorrow!

We will have two practice rounds for the golf league before actual competition starts this year. This gives everyone a chance to turn in some scores to establish a start-of-season handicap, and to get back into the swing of things.  If you play practice rounds, your handicap for the start of the season will be determined half from your handicap at the end of last year + 2, and half from the practice rounds you play.  Our first practice round is coming up tomorrow — Monday, May 3.  Plan to play, turn in your scorecard, and reconnect with your friends in the golf league (or turn in a golf-out if you play later in the week in the better weather).

If you are new to the league this year, please plan to play and establish some scores for your handicap at the start of the year.  If you can't play on Mondays the next two weeks, please golf out, and make sure you have a front-nine and a back-nine score if possible.  See you at the course!
