Rain dampens turnout on Labor Day; Kraynak wins Stableford Tournament

The dreary, rainy Labor Day weather kept many league members away from the course, so there will be lots of golf-out scores used for this week.  Of the people who played on Monday, Justin Kraynak won the Modified Stableford Tournament special event, earning +5 points for his round.  Dick Osborne took second place with a score of +1; Jim Anderson was third in the event, also with a score of +1 but losing to Dick in the handicap tie-breaker; and Blase Cindric finished fourth.  All the results from Week 17 of league play are posted on this web site.  Only one week remains in the regular season, so the flight races are close and will come down to who plays the best next week.  Be sure to bring your A-game to the course!

Our end-of-year outing is all set for Deer Creek Golf Course in Hubbard, OH on Saturday, September 24, with a 1:30 pm shotgun start.  After golf, we'll stay at Deer Creek in the upper shelter for our meal and the distribution of prizes.  Should be a fun way to finish off the 2022 season!

Lowry Thrashes Captain Bogey to Take the Top Spot in the Special Event of the Week

In this week's fun event, each player took on Captain Bogey in match play.  Jim Lowry beat the Captain on eight of the nine holes in the round, and tied him on the other hole, to win the event by beating the Captain 8 up.  There were six players who were 7 up on the Captain in their matches, so the handicap tie-breaker was used to determine second through fourth places.  Judy Malatesta took the runner-up spot, Michelle Goodemote finished in third place and Gordon Longstreet took fourth place.  To see all the week's results, use the links on this page.

With only two weeks left in the 2022 season, the flight races are up for grabs, and who finishes in the top three spots in each flight will come down to who plays best down the stretch.  Bring your best game to the course and finish strong the next two weeks!

Season Enters Home Stretch; Wolf wins 33–24–15 Special Event

Only three more weeks remain in the 2022 Thelma's Golf Nook season, and many of the flight races are tight as we head toward the end of the second half.  Jim Wolf was the winner of the 33-24-15 tournament special event, winning by 3 points over runner-up Jim Anderson.  Deb Fair finished 3rd via the handicap tie-breaker, and Pam Mickley took the 4th spot in the special event for the week.  You can see the points earned by each player in the special event, along with the flight and skins results by using the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

Looking ahead, don't forget that our end-of-year outing is scheduled to be held on Saturday, September 24, with a catered meal after the golf.  We'll also distribute prizes from the day's golf along with prizes from the season.  Make plans to join us!  We're putting the finising touches on where and what time we will play on that day, so watch your e-mail in-box for news!

Many Fairways Were Missed Off the Tee as Ondo Wins Special Event

Congratulations to Andrew Ondo, who missed 6 out of 7 fairways for the round and won the top prize in this week's special fun event – the only time that missing fairways helps you!  Brennan Lowry finished in 2nd place by the tie-breaker, also missing 6 of 7 fairways.  Carol Osborne finished in third place and Mike Bazoian finished fourth, both missing 5 of 7 fairways for their round and winning the tie-breakers for those positions.

With four more weeks left in the second half of the 2022 season, the races for the top three spots in each flight are still up for grabs.  Be sure to view all the results of this week's play on the league's web site.  If you don't have a back-nine golf out in the bank, remember that you can submit a golf-out score for that nine by Sunday of this week to count for your Week # 14 score.

Races Tighten in Many Flights; Anderson Wins The Elimination Challenge

We had high temperatures, high humidity and low scores turned in on Monday for Week # 13 of action in Thelma's Golf Nook!  The standings in several of the flights changed this week, as many good scores were turned in.  In the Special Event of the week, The Elimination Challenge, there were 18 players who made it through all 9 holes without being eliminated, so they are ranked by their net totals for the round.  Jim Anderson was the winner of the Elimination Challenge for 2022, firing a 3-under-par net score of 33.  Michelle Goodemote and Jim Wolf carded net scores of 34, with Michelle winning the handicap tie-breaker to finish in 2nd place; Jim took 3rd place.  Dave McClinton finished in fourth place with a net 35 for the week.  Use the links on this page to view all results of league matches, the Skins Games and the Special Event of the Week.

Many Early Net Bogeys in League Play this Week; Wolf Takes Top Spot in Special Event

Five players who played on Monday had long stretches of holes without making a net bogey from the start of their rounds, and one of them made it through the whole round without carding a net bogey.  Jim Wolf finished in first place by playing all 9 holes without making a net bogey, while Mary Ann Walsh took the runner-up spot by playing her first 8 holes without a net bogey.  Emma Weingartner finished in third place with 7 straight holes without a net bogey, and Paula Lawrence finished in fourth place by playing 6 holes in a row without making a net bogey, winning the handicap tie-breaker.  To see all results from Week # 12 of league action, use the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

Osborne Scores Closest to 25 on the 25th of July

It was a very comfortable, beautiful weather day for late July, and that led to some hot scores being turned in by league members this week.  In the special event for Week 11, Charlene Osborne won the tie-breaker for the top prize after shooting a net score of 28 after the first 7 holes of the round.  There were 4 league members who had a net score of 28 after 7 holes in their Monday rounds, and the finishing positions were determined by the handicap tie-breaker rules.  Dick Osborne took this week's runner-up spot, Bob Noble was third, and Jim Helmetzi finished in fourth.

For the second week in a row, a member of the Eagles Club posted an eagle – this week, Jim Anderson made a 2 on hole # 1.  You can use the links at the top and/or right side of this page to see all the week's results and the current standings in all the flights.

Second Half of Season gets underway; Mickley wins Fewest Putts Event

The first week of the 2nd half of the season saw some good scores that were turned in by league members.  In the special event on July 18, Pam Mickley was the hot putter of the week, needing only 16 putts to complete her round and winning the handicap tiebreaker over the other players who also had 16 putts for their round.  Gary Rice was runner-up, Jim Lowry took third place, and Brennan Lowry finished in 4th place.  Dean Osborne carded the first gross eagle of the season made by members of the Eagles Club with a 3 on # 12.  You can view the gross scores, net skins, special event results, Hole-of-the-Week Club and Eagles Club information by using the links at the top and/or right-side of the league home page.

First Half of Season ends with exciting action in all Flights

The July 11 round of play in Thelma's Golf Nook marked the end of the first half of the 2022 season.  The top three finishers in each flight win a prize to be distributed at the end-of-season outing in September.  The winners in each flight won't be officially determined until this Sunday night, because league members have until then to submit a golf-out score for the week if they didn't play on Monday.  Click on the "Standings" link at the top of the page and then check out the link for July 11 to see the unofficial standings for the first half.  In Week 9's special event, Dick Osborne won the first place prize with a score of 65 points, Dave McClinton was runner-up with 61 points, Andrew Ondo finished 3rd with 57 points, and Brennan Lowry was fourth with 43 points.

See you on Sunday for our Mid-Season Outing!  It'll be a 2:00 pm shotgun start for our 18-hole scramble, with our picnic supper to follow the golf.  Let's have a great day and get ready for the second half of league competition.

Curic Partners With Old Man Par to Take Top Honors in Special Event of the Week on the 4th of July

With only one week to go in the first half of the 2022 season, the races in most of the flights are still up for grabs, so next week promises to be exciting as the first half flight winners are determined.  Be sure to play this coming Monday or have a front-nine golf-out score turned in for the last week of the first half!

Tony Curic teamed up with Old Man Par to shoot a better-ball net score of 31 to win this week's fun event; Gary Rice also had a net team score of 31, but finished in second place due to the handicap tie-breaker.  Carol Osborne finished third with a team score of 32, and Jim Anderson's 32 put him in fourth place after the tie-breaker was applied.  To see the latest results from the league, use the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

The Mid-Season Outing / Field Day for our league will be Sunday, July 17 at Tam O'Shanter.  We will be playing an 18-hole Scramble with a 2:00 pm shotgun start, followed by a picnic dinner after the conclusion of the golf.  A sign-up sheet will be at the front counter at Tam O'Shanter, and is available even if you golf-out — please sign the sheet and indicate whether you will be coming for both golf and dinner, for dinner only, or if you won't be able to attend the outing this year.  Guests are welcome for $15, and you can sign their names to the sign-up sheet as well.  Should be a lot of fun, so make plans to be there!  PLEASE let us know soon if you will be attending — thank you.

Kraynak Has Most One-Putt Greens; Only Two More Weeks Left in First Half of Season

Justin Kraynak had 4 one-putt greens on June 27, more than anyone else who played on league Monday, so he takes the first place prize in this week's Fun Special Event.  There were 4 league members who had 3 one-putt greens, so the handicap tie-breaker was used to determine second through fourth places in the event.  Janice Schwanbeck took 2nd place, Pam Mickley finished in 3rd place and Dean Osborne was 4th.  With just two weeks remaining in the first half of the season, it's time to start thinking about our Mid-Season Outing, scheduled for Sunday, July 17 at Tam O'Shanter.  This event will be an 18 hole scramble with a 2:00 pm shotgun start, followed by a picnic supper at the course.  Be sure to plan to play in this special league event!  A signup sheet will be available at the course the next two Mondays for you to let us know if you will be able to make it, or you can send e-mail to thelmas@blaseweb.com to let us know if you can participate.

DeJulia Cards Most Gross and Net 5's on June 20

The first half of the season is now two-thirds complete, and the flight races are taking shape but are still up for grabs.  Mike DeJulia won this week's special fun event, having the most gross and net 5's on his scorecard, with eight of them.  JoAnn Bahr, Dick Osborne and Dean Osborne all had seven 5's and took 2nd through 4th places in the event because of the handicap tie-breaker.  All of the results from Week 6 of the season can be viewed by using the links at the top or right-hand side of this page.

Mark your calendars — our Mid-Season Outing / Field Day will be held on Sunday, July 17 at Tam O'Shanter.  We'll have a 2:00 pm shotgun start for the golf, followed by food and fun.  More details about the outing will be forthcoming in the next several weeks, so stay tuned.

Goodemote wins Sudden-Death Playoff on 1st Hole

The special event this week was a Sudden-Death Playoff involving everyone in the league who played on Monday, starting on # 1.  On the first hole, Michelle Goodemote beat the entire field with a net 2 to win the special event.  The playoff had to continue until we determined our top 4 finishers for the prizes; there were 14 players who made a net 3 on # 1, so they continued on to # 2 in the playoff, while the rest of the field was out of the playoff.  On # 2, only 3 people in the playoff scored a net 2, so they continued in the playoff, while the others were knocked out of contention for the prizes.  All three of those players posted a net 5 on # 3 and a net 3 on # 4, but on # 5, Jim Wolf made a net 7 to finish in fourth place in the event.  Gordon Longstreet and Bob Noble both made net 4s on # 5, so the playoff continued on to # 6, where Gordon took second place with a net birdie; Bob's net bogey on # 6 was good for third place in the special event.  You can view all results from the June 13th round by using the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

The date and location of our Mid-Season Outing is Sunday, July 17 at Tam O'Shanter.  More details will be shared in the next couple of weeks about this fun league event.  Save the date!

Osborne Wins Best Poker Hand Event with Five of a Kind

Our 5:30 shotgun start for Week 4 of league action went very well, with some low scores shot by league members.  In the Special Event this week, Dick Osborne carded five net 5's to post the best poker hand for anyone who played on Monday.  Carol Osborne, Tony Curic and Justin Kraynak each had five net 4's for their poker hands and took second, third and fourth place, respectively, via the handicap tie-breaker.

After four weeks of league play, Mary Ann Walsh has taken a 2-stroke lead in the Hole-of-the-Week Club standings, by virtue of her net birdie on the hole of the week this week, # 11.  There is a 5-way tie for second place at even par; to see the Hole-of-the-Week Club standings, the poker hands made from the net scores of everyone who played their league round on Monday, and all other results of week # 4 of league play, use the links at the top or at the right side of this page.

Beautiful Weather on Memorial Day; Piccirilli Wins Special Event of the Week

After three weeks of league play in 2022, the races in each flight are starting to take shape.  Each flight is competitive, and in half of the flights the lead changed hands this week.  Be sure to turn in golf-outs for the weeks you can't play on Monday.

Michelle Piccirilli won the special event for the week, with a score of 21 after throwing out her two worst net holes.  Second place went to Gordon Longstreet, who also had 21 strokes not counting his two worst scores, but he finishes behind Michelle in the handicap tie-breaker.  Justin Kranyak finished third with 22 strokes on his 7 best net holes, and Amber Hast won the hanicap tie-breaker for 4th place among the players with scores of 23 for the special event.  All of the results from the third week of league play can be viewed by using the links at the top or right-hand side of this page.

IMPORTANT:  For our next league round, scheduled for Monday, June 6, we will have a special shot-gun start at 5:30 pm for our league play on the back-nine, because Tam O'Shanter is closed until 5:15 pm for a large golf outing that day.  The shotgun start should be fun – try to attend!  But if you can't play at that later-in-the-day time on 6/6, you can always turn in a back-nine golf-out score for the week anytime before Sunday, June 12.

Madden, Lawrence are Most Accurate Drivers on May 23; Most Flight Races Tight after Two Weeks

The standings in five of the six flights are close after the first two weeks of league play, with the flight leader ahead by 2 points or less.  The exception is Flight D, where Jen Abbott is out to a 2½ point lead, but it's still very early in the season!  In our league, it really hurts you if you miss a week of league play without turning in a golf-out score, so be sure to golf out during those weeks that you can't make it on Monday for league play.  You can also bank golf-out scores in advance if you know that you'll have to miss on a particular league day.

The special event for the week was most tee shots in the fairway, and Karen Madden and Paula Lawrence did as well as a player can do, hitting 7 out of 7 fairways in their rounds.  Karen takes the top prize by virtue of the handicap tie-breaker, and Paula is runner-up for the event.  Charlene Osborne took 3rd place by hitting 6 of 7 fairways, and Michelle Piccirilli took 4th place via the handicap tie-breaker among the 8 league members who hit 5 of 7 fairways in their round.  Use the links at the top or right-hand side of the page to see all the results from Week # 2 of league play.

This coming Monday is Memorial Day, and it will be a normal league play day for us.  Tam O'Shanter has arranged for us to pay the regular weekday rate if we start our round after noon, so make your plans to celebrate the holiday on the links!  If you can't make it that day to play, you can use a golf-out score that you have in the bank or one that you turn in later in the week.

Season Opens on a Day of Mixed Weather; Schwanbeck wins Fewest Putts Event

It was weird weather on May 16 for the opening round of play in the Thelma's Golf Nook League for 2022 – kind of gloomy and rainy to start, then it cleared up and was nice.  In the special event of the week, Janice Schwanbeck won the handicap tiebreaker among the three players who only used 15 putts for their rounds to take the top spot.  Bob Noble and Dean Osborne also had 15 putts in their rounds, and they tied for 2nd place since they have the same first week handicap; they will split the combined winnings for 2nd and 3rd place.  Fourth place in the special event went to Gary Rice, with 16 total putts; this year, 4th place in the special event wins a Thelma's Golf Nook Poker Chip Ball Marker.  You can view the gross scores, net skins, special event results, Eagle's Club and Hole-of-the-Week Club information and season-long statistical summary by using the links at the top and/or right-side of the league home page.

We will calculate new handicaps after each week of league play, so you can see what your handicap will be for next week by clicking on the "Handicaps for Week 2" link in the right-hand column of the league home page.

The flight standings aren't finalized until all league members have a chance to turn in a golf-out score for the week.  If you play a round on the same nine as we played that week (week 1 was on the front nine) you can turn in a score for the week as long as you do it by Sunday night of the week you missed.  You can also turn in scores in advance to be put in the golf-out bank if you know you'll be missing a week in the future.  Just leave your scorecard with the staff at the front desk at Tam O'Shanter.

Ready for the Start of the Season on Monday, May 16

The 2022 Thelma's Golf Nook season gets underway this Monday, May 16.  Check the "Flights for First Half" and "Handicaps for Week 1" links in the right-hand column of this page to see what your starting handicap and flight will be.  All players will be placed in a flight with players of comparable handicaps.   We will adjust handicaps each week based on the previous week's score, but you will stay in the same flight for the entire first half of the season.

The weather forecast looks pretty good for Monday, so hopefully we'll have a big turnout of players for the first week of league play.  Good luck to one and all, and let's get off to a great start this year!

May12

Second Practice Round Scheduled for May 9

Hopefully the weather will allow many league members will tee it up this week at Tam O'Shanter.  Please turn in your scorecard so we can calculate handicaps for the start of the season.  If you know of anyone who's thinking of joining the league this year, please encourage them to play practice rounds so they will have a handicap for the first weeks of league play.

We're including a new season-long optional competition in the league this year called the Hole-of-the-Week Club.  If you want to play, it's only $18 for the whole season (that's just $1 a week).  Each week, one of the holes in your nine will be designated as the Hole of the Week, and we'll record your net score on that hole (after handicap strokes are deducted) in the book.  At the end of the season, the players with the lowest total for the Holes of the Week will split the pot!  How many places we pay out will be based on how many people participate.  Here are the holes of the week for each week:

May 16:   Hole # 1 June 27:   Hole # 4 Aug 8:   Hole # 7
May 23:   Hole # 10 July 4:   Hole # 13 Aug 15:   Hole # 16
May 30:   Hole # 2 July 11:   Hole # 5 Aug 22:   Hole # 8
June 6:   Hole # 11 July 18:   Hole # 14 Aug 29:   Hole # 17
June 13:   Hole # 3 July 25:   Hole # 6 Sept 5:   Hole # 9
June 20:   Hole # 12 Aug 1:   Hole # 15 Sept 12:   Hole # 18

Since we're using net scores, everyone has a good chance to win this, especially higher handicap players.  Why not give it a shot this year and join the fun?!?

If you've paid your league dues already, thank you! Don't forget that league dues must be paid by May 30.

May7

First Practice Round is Tomorrow!

We will have two practice rounds for the golf league before actual competition starts this year. This gives everyone a chance to turn in some scores to establish a start-of-season handicap, and to get back into the swing of things.  If you play practice rounds, your handicap for the start of the season will be determined half from your handicap at the end of last year + 2, and half from the practice rounds you play.  Our first practice round is coming up tomorrow — Monday, May 2.  Plan to play, turn in your scorecard, and reconnect with your friends in the golf league (or since the weather looks a little iffy, turn in a golf-out score if you play later in the week when the weather is a little nicer).

If you are new to the league this year, please plan to play and establish some scores for your handicap at the start of the year.  If you can't play on Mondays the next two weeks, please golf out, and make sure you have a front-nine and a back-nine score if possible.  See you at the course!
