Many Early Net Bogeys in League Play this Week; Iwanejko Takes Top Spot in Special Event

With only one week to go in the first half of the 2020 season, the races in six of the seven flights are still up for grabs with the leader ahead by less than 2 points, so next week promises to be exciting as the first half flight winners are determined.  Be sure to play this coming Monday or have a front-nine golf-out score turned in for the last week of the first half!

Only eight players who played on Monday made it past hole # 11 without making a net bogey from the start of their rounds, and two of them made it past hole # 14 before carding a net bogey.  Patty Iwanejko finished in first place by playing her first 5 holes of her round without making a net bogey, winning the handicap tiebreaker over Maureen DiFeo, who also had 5 holes from the start of her round without a net bogey and finished in the runner-up spot.  Mary Ann Walsh took 3rd place with a streak of 4 consecutive holes in her round without a net bogey.  Paula Lawrence also had 4 consecutive holes without a net boget and won the tie-breaker for fourth place.  Check out all the results from this week's play on this web site.

Piccirilli Partners With Old Man Par to Take Top Honors in Special Event of the Week

Big thunderstorms rolled through the Valley on Monday afternoon, keeping many players away on league day.  Just 14 league members played their rounds on Monday.  Don't forget that you can turn in a golf-out score later this week up until Saturday night to count for Week # 6 of league play.

Michelle Piccirilli teamed up with Old Man Par to shoot a better-ball net score of 32 to win this week's fun event; Dean Osborne and Dick Osborne also had a net team score of 32, but finished in second and third places, respectively, due to the handicap tie-breaker.  Patty Kuzniar won the tie-breaker for fourth place with a team score of 33.  To see the latest results from the league, use the links at the top and/or right side of this page.

See you on Sunday for our Mid-Season Outing!  It'll be a 12:30 pm shotgun start for our 18-hole scramble, with burgers and a side dish to follow the golf.  Let's have a great day at our annual mid-season get-together.  An e-mail will be sent to all league members in a day or two with details for the teams for the scramble.

In the Special Event this week, Bill Schuster carded five net 5's to post the best poker hand of everyone who played on Monday.  There were 13 players who had five net 4's for their June 8 round, so the handicap tiebreaker was used to determine the top finishers.  Sam Herskovitz finished second in the event, with Tony Curic and Carol Osborne finishing in a tie for third place.

Rich Joseph, Charlene Osborne, Brandon Benic and Mary Ann Walsh extended their leads in their flights this week; Barb Carbone and Paula Lawrence held onto their leads in their flights; and Gordon Longstreet moved into the top spot in his flight.  We've reached the halfway point in the first half of the season, but the flight races are still up for grabs as we continue on through the month of June.  To see the poker hands made from all players' net scores, and all other results of week # 4 of league play, use the links at the top or at the right side of this page.

Flight Races Get Closer; Schwanbeck Wins First Special Event of the Season

After three weeks of league play in 2020, each flight is very competitive at the top, with the leader in four of the seven flights holding a lead of 2 points or less.  In five of the seven flights, a new leader emerged after week 3.  Looks like it will be a fight to the finish to see who will come out on top of each flight at the end of the first half of the season!

Janice Schwanbeck won the special event for the June 1 round, with a score of 20 after throwing out her two worst net scores.  Michelle Piccirilli was runner up with a score of 21 for the event.  Michele Means and Donna Neff tied for third with a score of 22, with the same handicap for Week # 3.  All of the results from the June 1 round of league play can be viewed by using the links at the top or right-hand side of this page.

Hot, Sunny Memorial Day Weather Leads to Good Scores

What a beautiful Memorial Day we had in 2020!  Some league members were as hot as the temperature, shooting low scores to take the lead in their flights.  31 players played their league rounds on Memorial Day, and those scores are shown on the web site currently.  Many other members played a golf-out earlier on the holiday weekend; those scores will be used when scores are finalized for Week # 2 unless a golf-out with a lower score is turned in later this week.  If you don't have a front nine golf-out in the bank, you can still turn in a golf-out score by this coming Sunday, May 31.

The deadline for paying your league dues is next Monday, June 1.  If you have already sent in your check, thank you!  Please send your check for the league dues and the optional Eagles' Club competition, made out to "Toss'd Greens Golf League", to our league treasurer at this address:

      Sharpsville, PA   16150

Our Mid-Season Outing / Field Day is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, which is coming up in 4 ½ weeks; we're still hoping to hold the outing and are looking into options depending on the regulations that will be in place at that time.  We'll keep you posted on developments regarding this outing.

Season Opens on a Day of Nice Weather; 37 League Members play on May 18

The weather turned out to be very nice for the opening round of play in the Toss'd Greens Golf League for 2020.  Several players got off to a hot start in their flights by playing good rounds.  In total, 37 players played their rounds on league Monday for Week # 1, and another 9 players have back-nine golf-outs in the bank that can be used for week 1 scores.  If you have a score in the bank, you don't have to play a golf-out later this week, but if you want to you can do that.  And you can still turn in a golf-out score up until Sunday of this week.  You can view the match results, Eagle's Club information and season-long statistical summary by using the links at the top and/or right-side of the league home page.  Only results from people who played on Monday or Tuesday this week are shown on the web site currently; the flight matches will be updated with golf-out scores at the end of the week, so don't worry if your match shows 0 points if you have a golf-out in the bank.

We will calculate new handicaps after each week of league play, so you can see what your handicap will be for next week by clicking on the "Handicaps for Week 2" link in the right-hand column of the league home page.

The flight standings aren't finalized until all league members have a chance to turn in a golf-out score for the week.  If you play a round on the same nine as we played that week (week 1 was on the back nine) you can turn in a score for the week as long as you do it by Sunday night of the week you missed.  You can also turn in scores in advance to be put in the golf-out bank if you know you'll be missing a week in the future.  Just leave your scorecard with the staff at the front desk at Tam O'Shanter.

Second Practice Round Scheduled for May 11

What the heck was that white stuff on the ground this morning?  Hardly May-like weather, that's for sure.  The second practice round for the 2020 season is scheduled for Monday of this coming week, May 11, but the forecast looks pretty cold.  If you play on Monday, bundle up!

It looks like the forecasts for the end of the upcoming week and next weekend look good (I saw 70s in the forecast, and that's outside, not just what you have your furnace set on!!).  Hopefully the weather will allow many league members to tee it up for a practice round on the front nine this week at Tam O'Shanter.  Please turn in your scorecard if you play any time this week so we can calculate handicaps for the start of the season.  If you know of anyone who's thinking of joining the league this year, please encourage them to play this week and contact us so they will have a handicap for the first weeks of league play.

If you've paid your league dues already, thank you! Don't forget that league dues must be paid by June 1 or scores won't count until payment is made.

PA golf courses to open May 1, so our pre-season practice rounds can begin after that!

Our early season play has been on hold due to the pandemic and health-related shutdown of golf courses in PA, but with the announcement yesterday that golf courses can reopen on May 1, we can plan to get our season underway.  As announced a couple of weeks ago to our e-mail list, we will have our normal two practice rounds for the league before we officially start the season.  This means that the first two Mondays of May (May 4 and May 11) will be practice rounds, where you will turn in your scores to establish your start-of-season handicap according to league rules, and the first actual week of league competition will be Monday, May 18.

There will be some changes in the way the league will be conducted in 2020 due to current events.  Be sure to see the first section in the League Rules Document for details on what's different this year, as well as all of the league rules, dues and activities.

We're looking forward to getting the season underway!  See you at the course.
